“Our 7 yr old daughter was diagnosed with a condition called Glut -1 Deficiency syndrome aged 4. Amongst other symptoms, she had a general weakness down her left side, tremors to her right hand, dystonia and paroxysmal dyskinesia.
As she grew old we noticed that she was unable to keep up physically with other children her own age or younger, and lacked confidence in many physical tasks. It was suggested that physio and OT may be of some benefit and so we looked into local service providers.
As soon as we met Karen at an open evening, she was easy to understand and passionate about sharing her knowledge to help children be their best. We booked an assessment and really didn’t give Karen much of a clue about what she would find, preferring instead to get her ’take’ on our daughter’s situation. C is only one of a handful of children diagnosed with this syndrome in the UK, and we have found over the past few years, that coming at the problems laterally can solve many mysteries with this rare disease! Anyway, within just an hour assessment (or an hour’s fun time according to C!) Karen had pulled up and noted all kinds of funny movements, fears and behaviours that we had been concerned about, and watched over the years. It highlighted that we were right to look for more help for our child, and that she needed the extra help to flourish.
C looked forward to her session every week, and we got feedback and exercises that we could practice at home. We are now at a stage where she can run, jump, throw and catch a ball! In fact she joins in with ALL our family activities and we make no allowances for her now. The sessions gave her confidence and the focus to concentrate and improve on tasks that she simply hadn’t been able to develop previously. I used to dread sports day at school - I actually felt she shouldn’t be humiliated against all the other children when she clearly wasn’t as able bodied as the others; now, I relish watching her finish the task and race to the finish line, leaving others in her trail!
I cannot recommend Sensory Steps and Karen more highly - the results are far better than we ever imagined”.

“I often think of the 3 years you (Nicci Long) worked with J on his sensory processing disorder as a turning point. Without your help he certainly would not be where he is and have the opportunity of a fantastic future. It is hard to see the long game when you are in the thick of it. Thank you for your help.”
